“Community” in Review in the United States: A Snapshot Examination of Its History, Salient Issues, Creation and Development in the United States

To introduce the inaugural issue of this journal, this paper was written to provide an extensive overview of the concept of community and its application in U.S. society. As such, the central contribution of this paper is an in-depth investigation of the several physical and social aspects of communities to showcase their importance to people and society as a whole. An extensive literature review was conducted to examine how communities are defined, how sociological research has historically explored communities, as well as the decline, resurgence, and fine-tuning of research approaches that have occurred, and discuss the different types of communities, their characteristics and importance to society. Moreover, this paper examines the methodology commonly used in community research, how these methods are applied to improve communities. Approaches to community development, the challenges communities face, and how a community interfaces with other socio-spatial units (city, county, and state) and with social institutions within the community are also discussed.
